Ralf Schwedler gained a PhD in Sciences from the RWTH Aachen, Germany, in 1995. He currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Groupe d'Etudes des Semiconducteurs (GES- CNRS), Université Montpellier II, France. His primary research topics include optical investigations of the carrier dynamics in III-V semiconductors and SiC, and the Wannier-Stark Effect in shallow semiconductor superlattices.

02/05/95 Doctorate in Sciences, thesis: Grundlagen und Charakterisierung von Wannier-Stark Modulatoren ( Basic Properties and Characterization of Wannier-Stark Modulators ) (in German), at the Institute for Semiconductor Electronics (Prof. H. Kurz), Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH), Aachen, Germany.
10/11/91 Diploma in Physics, thesis: Elektrolumineszenz- und Elektroabsorptionsspektroskopie an InP/InGaAs(P) Multi-Quantum-Well Strukturen ( Electro-luminescence and Electro-Absorption Spectroscopy on InP/InGaAs(P) Multi-Quantum Well Structures ) (in German), at the Institute for Semiconductor Electronics (Prof. H. Professional Experience

    since
    03/01/1995
Postdoctoral researcher, Groupe d'Etudes des Semiconducteurs, Université Montpellier II, France.

Streak Image Optical spectroscopy, including picosecond time-resolved luminescence, of III/V semiconductors (GaInP/GaAs, InGaAs/InGaAs, GaN) and SiC. Carrier relaxation in disordered semiconductor material. Image processing, numerical simulations of optical properties and carrier relaxation, and all the related C, C++ and UNIX stuff. And, of course, I'm maintaining this WWW server and, much too often, the HP station on which it runs.

10/12/1991 - 1/31/1995 Research assistant, Institute for Semiconductor Electronics, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH), Aachen, Germany.
1989 - 1991 Student research assistant, Institute for Semiconductor Electronics, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH), Aachen, Germany.

Continous wave optical spectroscopy (photoluminescence, photocurrent, transmission, reflection, optical gain) on III/V semiconductor bulk material and heterostructures (InGaAs/InP, AlGaAs/GaAs, GaInP/GaAs, GaP, SiGe).

Numerical simulations of band structure, confined electronic states, Wannier-Stark Effect, and ultrafast carrier dynamics in semiconductor heterostructures, under UNIX System V and Linux, using FORTRAN, C and C++. Analysis of experimental results from X-ray diffractometry, mass spectrometry and electron microscopy, and development of methods to correlate these results with optical properties.

Managed CW-optical laboratory, including CW laser systems, optical cryostats and related vacuum technology, monochromators, detectors and spectrophotometer. Wrote software for data acquisition (GPIB, parallel busses) and visualization (GEM), using C and assembler.

Installed and maintained UNIX System V (Atari Developers Release) machines including Motif, Networking (Mail, FTP, NFS, WWW), and ported lots of standard software (gcc, ghostscript, scientific visualization software) for that platform. Installed and maintained several LINUX boxes.

1987 - 1988 Student research assistant, Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology, Aachen, Germany.

Welding and soldering using pulsed and quasi-CW Nd:YAG lasers. Wrote software for laser marking (Turbo Pascal, CPM) and image analysis and processing (ASYST, IBM Pascal, IBM/PC). Helped in installation and maintenance of Nd:YAG laser laboratory.

1987 Student research assistant, Workgroup Technology and Society, Nuclear Research Center, Jülich, Germany.

Evaluated literature for a mainly sociological study on the future role of non-thermal laser applications.

1985 - 1987 Programmer, Data Beutner KG, Kellinghusen, Germany.

Wrote educational programs on Schneider (aka Amstrad) and MSX microcomputers, in BASIC (I admit) and Z80 assembler.

1983 - 1984 Ambulance man, German Red Cross, Itzehoe, Germany, Germany.
